U2 Take a Stand At The Oscars With 'The Hands That Built America'

It’s March 7 and the Oscars air tonight on ABC.



U2 won’t be on hand at this year’s ceremony. It Might Get Loud seemed like a shoo-in for Best Documentary and “Winter” had a decent shot at Best Original Song, but neither earned nominations. What’s more is that the Best Song nominees won’t even perform at tonight’s ceremony.

The situation was a bit different in 2003, when U2 took the stage at the Oscars with “The Hands That Built America.” Commissioned for Martin Scorsese’s Gangs of New York and also appearing on The Best of 1990-2000, “Hands” is initially set in the same time period as the film, tracing the evolving relationship between Ireland and America from the late 1800s to the modern day.

Beginning just days before the 2003 Oscars, America’s controversial invasion of Iraq marked a jolt in that bond’s growth. The fallout from Bono’s choice of words upon winning the Golden Globe for Best Original Song two months earlier demanded he watch his tongue, but U2 refused to suppress their distaste for recent events.

For the final verse, which originally referenced the 2001 World Trade Center attacks, Bono substituted two new lines about the war: “In the spring, a yellow cloud on a desert skyline / Some father’s son, is it his or is it mine?” The sentiment dovetails with the rest of the song, introducing a set of “hands” America now more deeply recognizes as influential in its the continual building and rebuilding, while also emphasizing the grave sense of confusion that arrives after one conflict breeds another.

For a coda, Larry drums out the first five beats of “Sunday Bloody Sunday,” as though to remind listeners, “I won’t heed the battle call.”

U2 lost Best Original Song to Eminem that night and have yet to have another crack at the category. But live being “where we live,” U2 made the most of “Hands,” both at the Oscars and after. Although retired since the end of the 2005-2006 Vertigo Tour, the song had a healthy life, cropping up in full several times but mostly giving eerie new vigor to “Bullet the Blue Sky” as a snippet.

Top 10 Music Albums... (part 1)

In a world filled with iTunes and other various tools to download songs, the idea of an album is lost on most people. They forget that a band took time to not only create these songs, but choose the order in which they go on a particular album. That was the idea, at least back in the day. Put out a song or two, people buy the album and hear the rest of the music. Now, people are more apt to just download their favorite song and ignore the rest. But, the following are the top 10 albums (and one honorable mention) in my opinion.

Those of you that know me, know how much I love music. From Deicide to D12 and everything in between. The criteria that I used to decide on this list, is just my general opinion, how many times I’ve bought the album (due to overuse or loss) and how well it flows from beginning to end.

At #11 (the honorable mention), is E-Town Concrete with their 2003 album, The Renaissance. From the solid metallic hip-hop beat on Mandibles to the old-school soundbites in Metroid, to the last lick on In The Heart Of Wolves, you can tell that these guys mean business. Formed in 1995, right around the same time as Limp Bizkit, these guys came from Elizabeth, New Jersey and had passion. There was something special about these guys and people who heard their music knew it. I saw them live and as soon as I heard their style, I knew it was something magical. They released a couple of albums after this one, but nothing captured the same magic as The Renaissance.

Coming in at #10, at the bottom of the list, is Pantera with “Vulgar Display Of Power.” This incredible album is what started what is affectionately known as “groove metal.” Groove-based playing intermixed with thrash metal. These guys started out as a hair metal band in the late 80’s, but left that behind with their debut album, Cowboys From Hell. That launched their sixteen year career, eventually breaking up in 2001. Vulgar Display Of Power, in my opinion, was their most solid album. They knew what they wanted and while most bands struggle with their sophomore album, Pantera put their proverbial nose to the grindstone and slammed out a spectacular record.

In the early to mid 90’s, a punk-like band came out that nobody ever heard of. There was something catchy about them and even though all of them had post-graduate degrees from Ivy League universities, they still decided to play music. Coming in at #9 is The Offspring with their debut album, Smash.

These guys put together an album that literally flows like warm butter from beginning to end. There is no downtime, but there isn’t any feeling of being overwhelmed with each song when it comes up. From beginning to end, you lose yourself in the music. You don’t notice that you’ve been listening for the hour-plus, but when it’s finished…you want to listen to it again. There is no stand-out song here, the entire album is worth it.

Must-have downloads : Just get the whole damn album.

Coming in at #8 is a band out of Florida. One of the many death metal bands to come from our most southern state in the continental United States. I think because it’s just so fucking hot down there, they feel the need to stay angry…all the time. But, this band is something more than that. They may sing about death and such, but I can tell you from personal experience, that these are the nicest bunch of guys you’ll ever meet. They do this, because they think it’s funny and they enjoy shocking people. #8 is Cannibal Corpse with The Bleeding.

I debated whether I wanted to put this one on here or not, but it’s such an incredible album, that I couldn’t help but to add it. If you take this sort of music seriously, there are plenty of other bands out there to fulfill that neck-snapping head moshing you feel the need for. These guys just have fun and it shows on their album, as well as at their shows. They were also portrayed in Ace Ventura: Pet Detective (where I saw them for the first time). Since then, I’ve been a huge fan…

Must-have downloads : Stripped Raped & Strangled, The Exorcist

At #7 is a guy out of Detroit, but not the first one that may come to mind, though he is on this list. I saw him originally at a show at the Masquerade in Atlanta, Georgia when he was opening for Monster Magnet. He loved playing music and it came out in the live show as well. While he knew that he wasn’t selling out arenas, he and the rest of the band put on one hell of a show. In at #7 is Kid Rock with “Rock N’ Roll Jesus”

This album is the embodiment of all that is Kid Rock. From his start in Detroit, to his country swagger, to his re-invention as a superstar, this album takes you to all of those places. There were a couple of other albums of his that I considered putting on here, but I thought that this was the best compilation of Kid Rock as an artist. It’s sad that the world lost Joe C. at such a young age, but I remember smoking some weed with him behind the Masquerade twelve years ago.

Rounding out the last one in part 1 is another gentleman from Detroit. This one, however, is the center of controversy wherever he goes. From a duet with Elton John to his well-publicized fights with his ex-wife (wait…are they married again? I can’t keep up), Eminem comes in at #6 with “The Eminem Show.”

A lot of people consider either “The Marshall Mathers LP” to be his best work. I, personally, think that he grew as a person with The Eminem Show. He was still strung out on drugs, but he had his daughter come around and he was learning what was important in his life. He had a better idea of what he was doing and he was no longer the angry kid that came out of Detroit and was simply looking to start some shit up. With The Eminem Show, he became a superstar. Now that he’s clean, I’m interested to see where he goes with his music…

B.o.B Reacts to Eminem’s Praise, Hints at Collaboration

Not too many artists can get Eminem to guest on their records, let alone their debut album. But when Slim Shady is already a fan, it doesn’t take much convincing. When asked if Em would appear on his April 27th release B.o.B Presents: The Adventures of Bobby Ray, B.o.B remained coy. “Could be true. Eminem might be on the album.” Em co-signed the “Nothin’ on You” hitmaker early on, saying, “B.o.B is crazy. That dude can rap, he can sing, he makes his own beats, he can play guitar, he can play the keyboard. I was like, ‘Do you dance too? What don’t you do?’ I think he’s like 20 years old and the dude is like crazy talented, especially for his age.” The Rebel Rock/Grand Hustle/Atlantic Records signee, whose first single is shooting up the charts, doesn’t take the compliment lightly. “That definitely adds a star to my strap. It’s crazy because when I was in middle school trying to rap, I used to always tell myself, one day I’m gonna be signed to Interscope,” he reveals. “I’m gonna be so dope at rapping that they’re gonna sign me just for being dope. Of course it didn’t happen that way, but just the fact that I got the recognition of one of the artists that influenced me the most is surreal.” So now that he’s met his idol, what’s the notoriously private rap star like in person? “He’s very calm, very opposite of Slim Shady. It’s like the alter-ego. And as an artist, you have to have the alter-ego thing. You have to have the split personality. It’s almost like you have to be crazy. You have to really lose your mind.”

How reality TV has influenced DOOCHEBAGS

Well well well, this is new ground for KD the COMIC a REAL BLOG, Ahhh kinda! LOL I would like to take time out to talk about REALity TV. We all know that NOTHING is REAL on TV anymore, it is not (Except Ghost hunters LOL), But what makes me sick is how it has seem to INFLUENCED EVERYONE. Example: Jon and Kate should have masterbate..I mean plus 8. It taught women its ok to be a controlling,over bearing bitch, who puts her kid into the spot light…HEY Lady the show was great when it was called EIGHT IS ENOUGH! Now Jon I know is no saint but you know what…maybe he didn’t want to do the show…OHHHH YEAH he left, and she has ANOTHER show Coming…whos the bad guy here? Kate also showed that BUTCH DIKE hair cuts are as cool as THE MULLET! Next the newest show on TV is JERSEY SHORE…whats the word in Shore i am looking for OHHH YEAH  W-HORE! I meen look at all these guys, nothing against them, but now I see every GUY wanting to be a JUICEHEAD, like in the 90’s it was cool to be black…yes I did it, but thats my point how weak minded we are as human begins that, this CRAP can INFLUANCE us! And the GUIDETTES?? Look I am not saying I wouldnt bang you cause I would…but now yu got girls wearing bumpits…300 pounds of play dough make up and chewing gum like your name was MR ED chewing hay! Sat. Jan 30&31 \ 2010

Right. So I just had the most boring and useless day of my life. I woke up, had breakfast, went to math class, and came home. That was my afternoon. I ate lunch, did some math homework, went out go get a haircut, followed my parents around some stupid store, and came home. And now I`m doing this. These kinds of days honestly chip my life bit by bit until I go crazy. I could tell this would be a bad day too because when I first woke up I felt as if life was pointless, just for a good 5 seconds. Why is that? I wonder to myself all the time. I think it`s because I need things in life to cheer me up, and I use those things to look forward to everyday. If I don’t have these things then why am I living? every other moment I live in life is to wait for the times I enjoy in life, and once that`s over I start all over again. How sad is life? So today was one of those days where I had completely nothing to look forward to, and I guess I realized this when I woke up this morning. So it is clear that I was right, but it`s fine now that the day is almost over. Since I lead such a lackluster life I look forward to little things such as seeing my friends or just being able to go out for a bit. So I will update you with the latest thing I can deem good enough to look forward into in my sad and boring life. Hmm, yes I have my skit coming up tomorrow. Church tomorrow can be for God and seeing my friends. I find that oh so uplifting.

I need to confide in people. I need to interact with fellow human beings otherwise I will go crazy. Do you get that feeling where there are some people you enjoy seeing and being around with? Because you know you will see that one person and it is enough for you to put everything else behind. I`m sure all of you have felt the same way. So there is that special someone I can see tomorrow and that gives me hope, to be able to look forward to it. Yes it is a girl I`m am looking forward to seeing, not a guy. I am not gay, just to throw that out there. : )

Um okay so this post is continued off yesterday, because I totally forgot about this. So this is now me writing after church. I am sad. Just a bit. Once again I have been opened to the fact that other people don’t have time for me. I look forward to seeing other people and what happens? They don`t want to see me, simple as that. I hate this feeling, when you look forward to something so much, and then it`s gone just like that. I have had that happen to me so much, I can`t do it anymore. I don’t want to look forward to anything because things happen and it shatters everything I put so much into. But if I don’t look forward to anything then life turns useless. So what the hell do I do? It looks like I can just make the choices either to give up on life and one day lose it? Or do I keep looking forward to fake things and let it trick me more and more? Either path doesn’t seem too appealing to me, but what can I do? I usually go play basketball Sunday night, because my parents do not mind letting me exercise. But now I`m afraid to look forward to that because what if I don’t get to go? Trust me, that`s happened a lot of times when my dad agrees and pulls out last minute because he believes I don’t deserve to go. I`ve had enough of that. I have had enough of all this. I guess it`s time for me to seclude myself from everyone else. I will do it. Watch me. Not that you would care. I just wish I could find that one person who will really understand me…

Editor's Pick #271: Green Day's Grammy Performance

Punk-Rock idols Green Day will perform at the 52nd Grammy Awards

Hey did you know that The Grammy Awards are on TV this Sunday! Yeah, neither did I. It’s true that The Grammy Awards are getting further from relevance every year, but there’s at least one thing to look forward to this year. Green Day will perform with the cast of “American Idiot” the musical. Having a broadway show based on your incredibly popular, mainstream CD might not be “punk-rock,” but the musical has been getting rave reviews. Recently, the musical wrapped up a record breaking three month stint at the Berkeley Repertory Theatre in California, and on April 20th the show will make it’s Broadway debut at the the St. James Theater. So, be sure to check out Green Day and a performance by Eminem, Lil Wayne, Drake and Travis Barker. On second thought, The Grammy’s might not be too bad this year.

You've Been Sleeping on the Best Rapper Out There. (Part One)

This is part one of a three-part series of posts I will write on the best rapper out, Tech N9ne.

That’s right. I said it.

The best rapper alive is not Kanye West. It’s not Eminem (at least right now). It’s not Lil’ Weezy and it’s not Jay-Z. The best rapper alive for this guy’s money is Tech N9ne.

Considering all the rap posts I’ve put together since this blog started five weeks ago, you at least have to know I listen to a lot of rap. It’s my favorite kind of music — not just for listening, but for debating.  And the greatest debate in this genre is “Who’s the best?”

For a long, long time, I said the best rapper alive was Eminem. Marshall was my favorite — not just because I was white and related to his stuff, but because I genuinely believed his rhyme scheme and his lyrical content was the best.

Then, a few years ago, I swore on my life Lil’ Wayne was the best rapper out there. Weezy busted into our lives using the mixtape circuit and put so much incredible material together it was hard to not believe him when he’d calmly say, “I’m the Best Rapper Alive since the best rapper retired (Jay-Z).” But with the way the Rebirth Fiasco (http://thekidisback.com/2010/01/08/rebirth) has gone, it’s only fair to say Lil’ Wayne just isn’t where he used to be.

Is there room to ascend? Sure there is. And maybe we’ll be writing about Drake as the biggest star alive after Thank Me Later drops in 2010. Maybe Em will re-ascend to the throne. There are a lot of maybes and ifs now in the rap game.

But the truth of the matter is the one artist who is continually putting out great music is Tech N9ne. There’s just indisputable evidence to prove it.

Some of you might be unfamiliar with the number one hip-hop independent artist in the world, but he’s been positively influencing my life since 2002, when he dropped the classic album Anghellic.

For whatever reason, Tech N9ne is incredibly popular in Northern California, where I grew up. I can remember riding around in my baseball teammate’s truck when he first threw Tech into the radio and told me I needed to hear him. And the first song I heard, of course, was his first original classic.

In college, you might have heard some of Tech’s classic bangers. The most famous song from Anghellic is, without doubt, Einstein Tech N9ne. Have a listen:



This song is a perfect example of what makes T9 one of the greatest rappers to be a fan of. He can rap as fast as Twista, only with significantly better lyrics and a more devilish, exciting quality to his music. He will throw in elements from theater and movies into his music (witnessed in the “KC, MO Rolllllll,” which is clearly an homage to The Wizard of Oz.)

Similar to Lil’ Wayne, I could link literally hundreds of Tech N9ne songs in this post because he’s developed such an amazing collection of records under his label, Strange Music. That’s not to mention one of his Kansas City protégés, Krizz Kaliko, has released two albums within the last two years under the label. Kali is featured on a number of Tech’s songs, including another of my favorites, I’m a Playa:

Kaliko is incredibly talented and his contributions to Tech’s music will be featured in another post on this site. That said, he’s been along for this incredible ride with Tech for the last few years as Strange Music’s popularity has exploded (relatively speaking, of course).

To give you an idea of where the Independent Hip-hop scene has taken this group of talented rappers, Tech’s last CD (my personal favorite of 2009), K.O.D. debuted at number 14 on the Billboard charts this past year.

That fact is incredible when you think about it. This guy literally doesn’t have a single on the radio at any point and makes such incredible music that his fans never miss a release. And there have been an unbelievable amount of releases over the past four years.

Starting in 2006, when Tech came out with his first full CD since the epic “Absolute Power,” he’s released FIVE full-length CDs (two as Tech N9ne Collabos, where he works with a number of Strange Music and other artists to create a number of songs, many of them with guest appearances).

Everready released in 2006. The album features an insane amount of classic jams – some of which were actually featured in the Justin Timberlake film, Alpha Dog. Of those, the one that may have defined my senior year of college and which resonates with even the most casual of rap fans has to be the incredible Caribou Lou:

I can almost guarantee you can play this song at any dance party across the United States and you’re going to get the party jumpin’ and the hotties humpin’.

Since Everready’s release, Tech’s come out with the aforementioned Tech N9ne Collabos albums, Misery Loves Kompany and Sickology 101. Both albums are incredible and feature 18 songs apiece, but of those 36, this song is the best in my opinion:

In any event, I’ll be spending a lot of time on this blog talking about Tech being underrated and alerting you any time he’s featured on a song because his talent needs to be more widespread.

Tech, at least this half of TKIB salutes you – and I’m hoping we can get more people to feel the way I do.
